The word for Friday - The Spaghettus cap

You know it, the most commonly worn headgear is the tricorn. It really makes a statement. But bandana and ribbon also score points, because they fit into any pocket and are therefore constant companions of the pirate. Both are also worn under the tricorn.

Since there has been another enquiry about where you can buy the caps that Brother Spaghettus wears, I'll let you in on the secret of how they're made, because they're not for sale. It's not witchcraft and quick to make, if it weren't for the pirate fish or the FSM in the middle. I always embroider them freehand with sewing thread or embroidery thread, depending on my mood. If you don't feel like it, you can get a pre-made emblem and sew it on or attach a button or do without it altogether.

And off you go!

First, find a fabric to make your cap out of. You don't have to spend precious doubloons for it. Surely you can find an old shirt or jacket among your clothes, which you don't use anymore, but which would fit well as a cap. It's more piratical, isn't it?

Once you have the fabric ready, measure the circumference of your head. I use a tape measure. If you don't have it at hand, just take a string. Then off to the galley! Find a pasta pot that fits halfway around your pirate skull.

This simplifies cutting out a round lid for the cap. The circumference of the circle is equal to the circumference of the head + 1 cm seam allowance. Now cut out an 8 cm wide strip. For example, if your head circumference is 58 cm, the strip must be 60 cm long because of the seam allowance.

One long side of the strip is now serrated or you fold the hem 2x. Then you have to add another 0.50 cm to the width. (I dyed a bed sheet for this cap. I used the already hemmed edge for myself when cutting. So I saved one work step).

Then place the 8 cm long ends of the strip right sides together and sew them together on the left side with a 1 cm wide seam. Now hem the strip on the jagged side.

The resulting circle is now connected to the lid of the cap. To do this, make marks on the non-jagged side of the strip and the lid. Quarter both pieces and cut about 2 mm at these points.

Now lay them right sides together at the cut marks and fix them. Now you can sew the parts together. Sew on the strip, if the lid is a little bigger, it is easier to correct. When the seam is finished, you can stitch it. That's all.

I also like to topstitch about 2 mm between the lid and the edge afterwards, or have had to work in several seams on both the lid and the edge when there is a shortage of fabric.

I lined the caps for the winter. So everything has to be cut twice.  Brother Spaghettus has accumulated quite a few caps, but none is like the other, just handmade.

If you got along with my specifications, great. But if you have any questions, don't be shy, I'll be happy to answer them.
